Right now I am reading The Red Queen (The Cousins’ War #2) by Philippa Gregory. Gregory is an author who I had been wanting to read for some time. I am officially in love with her writing! She spins some incredible historical fiction that leaves me constantly aching for more. I have the hardest time putting her books down! The first of her books I read was The White Queen (The Cousins’ War #1) and it tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, wife and Queen to Edward IV of England. The Red Queen, which I am currently reading, is the story of Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry Tudor aka King Henry VII of England. I had never read much about her though I am fascinated by Tudor era England. Margaret is a member of the Lancaster branch of the Plantagenet family, hence the title of The Red Queen. The title for The White Queen comes from Elizabeth being the Queen to the York Plantagenet King Edward IV and mother to the Princes in the Tower. I was already fascinated by the history of the Wars of the Roses, especially knowing my ancestors are those Lancasters. So far, Margaret’s story is one that breaks my heart. She was a woman determined to rule her own life in a world where she would never be allowed to. She dreamed of greatness not knowing that she would be the mother to a dynasty of Kings and Queens of England. This woman would who would give birth to her son Henry, future King Henry VII, at the age of thirteen would live to see her son rule England as King and to even see her grandson’s, King Henry VIII’s, coronation shortly before her death. Her life is certainly remarkable, as was that of Elizabeth Woodville. I will certainly be looking for some non fiction to read on these woman. But why did I finally begin to read these? Watching the Starz series, The White Queen, made it so I could not procrastinate reading them any longer. Now I am truly on a new adventure in reading, traveling back in time to England’s bloodiest period.
